Welcome to our Botanical Diary, following along with the growing season at Frayed Knot Farm.
As new blooms come to life at this Northeast Ohio farmstead, we're sharing information and at-home styling inspiration for each plant.

Flowering Basil is a little bit of a secret weapon in my bouquet making. We've been denied fragrant florals for too long! When flowers are shipped across the world they are picked early or lose their scent in transport. So that's why I like to incorporate herbs into my bouquets and grow it for its multiple uses.
The pollinators also LOVE flower herbs, changing the taste of their honey!
-Em Pek, Frayed Knot Farms
In the mint family, and originating from tropical roots in Africa and Asia. Used for culinary purposes and religious ceremonies alike for its high levels of essential oils. (Wikipedia, Herb Society of America)

And she forgot the stars, the moon, and sun,
And she forgot the blue above the trees,
And she forgot the dells where waters run,
And she forgot the chilly autumn breeze;
She had no knowledge when the day was done,
And the new morn she saw not: but in peace
Hung over her sweet Basil evermore,
And moisten’d it with tears unto the core.
- from Isabella; or the pot of basil by John Keats

Revel in the pure summer that is basil- these are such fun to play with, the perfect mix of max foliage and sweet spire flower. Use that heady scent to your advantage -- give a leaf a little squeeze when you walk by!

The rich color of this basil variety is so striking- used against lighter backdrops (or tablecloths!) and that deep burgundy sings. I love earthy, natural textured vessels with these- they remind me of the earth in the herb garden.
